Park Jae-sang, known to the word as Psy, is a South Korean artist who rose to insane popularity after his hit single “Gangnam Style” went viral. Domestically known for his humorous videos and stage performances, the song’s catchphrase was even entered into The Yale Book of Quotations as one of the most famous quotations of 2012. “Gangnam Style” became the first YouTube video to reach one billion and two billion views, and is still enjoyed by millions all around the globe.
The song and the music video became an internet sensation and have influenced pop culture worldwide since then. The song had topped the music charts of more than 30 countries by the end of 2012. It received praise for its catchy beat and Psy’s amusing dance moves, which became a phenomenon in themselves. The signature moves were even attempted by political leaders like Barack Obama, David Cameron, and Ban Ki-Moon. Ban-Ki Moon even called it a “force for world peace”. And as you see can see in the video below, he wasn’t entirely wrong.
This catchy song has broken language barriers like no other. In 2012, more than 20,000 people gathered in Paris at Trocadero for a live spontaneous performance of “Gangnam Style”. The people didn’t know the words, but the moment Psy came onstage, they started singing along with him anyway! Even Psy was shocked by the response he received. This was his first show in France, and the impromptu tribute by the crowd left him speechless. He even promised them a true PSY concert in Paris soon!
