Meet Joe Serna. This former Special Forces soldier has done four combat tours in Afghanistan, over an almost two-decades-long career in the U.S. Army. During that time, he was nearly killed three times. And while he has earned three Purple Hearts and several military accolades, he’s been unable to forget the woes of the battlefield. His time in the army has left a permanent scar on his mind. After he returned back home, the decorated Green Beret suffered from post-traumatic stress disorder and was charged with driving under the influence.
Serna was served with probation. But he was caught later that year as well, drinking while he was still on probation. This broke his parole and he was sentenced to a night in jail. But things went a little differently than expected. The judge who sentenced Serna shocked everyone when he walked into the man’s cell in order to wait out the sentence with him. Judge Joe Olivera gave Serna his sentence for breaking parole, but he knew everything the decorated veteran went through. So he took a different approach.
Judge Olivera knew about Serna’s PTSD and claustrophobia – so he wanted to give him some support. He spent the night with the man, connecting over family and eating meatloaf. Nothing but respect to both of these individuals! Watch the full story below. What are your thoughts about this? Feel free to share them with us in the comments section!
