Hurricane Harvey was a disaster. It is the costliest tropical cyclone on record, inflicting roughly around $125 billion in damage. It was the first major hurricane to make landfall in the USA since Wilma in 2005, ending a record 12-year span in which no hurricanes made landfall at such an intensity in the nation. In a four-day period, several areas received more than 40 inches of rain as the system slowly meandered over eastern Texas and adjacent waters, causing catastrophic flooding.
Harvey was the wettest tropical cyclone on record in the United States. The resulting floods swamped hundreds of thousands of homes, displaced more than 30,000 people, and incited more than 17,000 rescues. Harvey caused at least 91 confirmed deaths: 1 in Guyana, and 90 in the United States. Total damage from the hurricane is estimated at $125 billion, making it the most expensive natural disaster to ever hit the USA.
But as you can see from the video below, some incredible things happened during the storm. Houston taxi driver, William Bruso, ended up making an unusual friend. When he returned to his taxi after getting food, Bruso found a hawk sitting on the passenger seat. Now named Harvey, the Coopers hawk refused to leave his shelter inside the cab. Bruso made sure the bird wasn’t injured and tried to release him, but Harvey refused to face the storm on his own. Eventually, the man had to agree to let the bird stay until the hurricane passed.
